The sentence isn’t complicated. It just doesn’t make sense.

He might say “It simulates a real automobile.”
Or
“It simulates what real automobiles are like.”

You are EXACTLY right!
The speaker is giving human characteristics to the machine (anthropomorphisizing) to help explain the idea of simulation. You might do this for a little child who already understands the word pretend.
