This memorandum is to discuss the proposed audit procedures associated with contingent liabilities and the purpose for which they are designed, as well as the relative credibility of those procedures.

The purpose regarding contingent liabilities in an audit is to make sure that they are properly disclosed and recorded if probable and estimatible. The main procedures to discover contingent liabilities are through management inquiry and letters to the attorneys. The external inquiry of attorneys corroborates management’s assertions that all contingent liabilities are properly disclosed and recorded. Management is the main source for this information but outside corroboration of such information such as legal inquiries is the most credible.
