Hi,
I have some sentences:
Would you mind if I closed the window?
No, that would be fine. (a)
Would you mind closing the window?
Not at all. I would be glad to. (b)
“Would” in (a) and (b) means……………Why “would” but not “is” or “am”?

Hi,
How can you use: “is” or “am”
in your examples?
Alan
Why not: That’s fine.
I am glad to.
But: That would be fine.
I would glad to.
“Would” in (1) , (2) means…

.
Would is used in polite language. The questions were asked politely (using would). And the responses simply reflect and continue the same degree of politeness (i.e., they also use would).
.
The same with “I say that you’re right” and “I’d say that you’re right”?

Hi,
In your example the use of would is putative in tone.
