b. One does not like to have his words doubted.

b. One does not like to have his words doubted.

a. One does not like to have his word doubted. --> his word means “his promise” or what he has sworn to do.
b. One does not like to have his words doubted. --> This is more general and his words simply refers only to what he says. It doesn’t necessarily have to be connected with a promise.
