To me, both the prepositions appear to be acceptable. Let me try to bring out the nuance.
For the remaining eight months of this year, let’s study hard and excel in our exams. (You are hopeful of making good the study-time already lost or whiled away).
In the remaining eight months of this year, let’s study hard and excel in our exams.(You have not worked as hard but you have eight months to make improvements so as to catch up with) — I think it makes sense.
It is better to place the phrase as Torsten has done.
