which one

hi everybody
which one is more use
1= he marred her reputation
2=he damage her reputation

Hi,

I would use ‘damage’. ‘Mar’ often has the sense of stain/blemish and is associated with visual ideas. Possibly you could use ‘mar’ with ‘image’. That has the same idea but I feel is a better use of ‘mar’.

Alan

Hi Alimysoul,

These are also definitions of ‘mar’ and you will see that they come closer to your usage. (I agree that ‘damaged’ would be better within the context, but ‘marred’ is not inadmissible.)

Impair the quality of; spoil
violence marred a number of New Year celebrations

to damage or spoil something good
SYNONYM blight, ruin
The game was marred by the behaviour of drunken fans.

thank you
