Looking for a job
.
.
Reporter1: Today we’re talking about employment.
Reporter2: Looking for a job. One place to start is the Canada Employment Center.
Reporter1: Dan, can you tell me what your job is?
Clerk: I’m an employment counselor.
Reporter1: What is it that you do?
Clerk: I try and help people find work.
.
.
What is it that you do?
1- What does “What is it that you do?” mean?
2- Is it an exact synonym for “What is your job?”?
Thank you

No. there is a distinction between your job and what you do. Their job is “employment counselor”. That is their job title.
“What do you do?” is asking about the actual tasks and duties.
Think of it like subject, verb, object.
An employment counselor [subject] finds [verb] jobs for people [object].

Very nice explanation.
“Job” and “what you do” are often used interchangeably.
A carpenter does carpentry.
A programmer programs.
A teacher teaches.
A mechanic works on cars.
Person A: What do you do?
Person B: I’m a carpenter.
Person A understands that a carpenter does carpentry.
Person A: What do you do?
Person B: I’m a PCB designer.
In this case, person A probably doesn’t know what a PCB designer is. So person B might need to provide more detail about what they do.
Person A: What do you do?
Person B: I’m a PCB designer.
Person A: What is a PCB designer?
Person B: PCB means Printed Circuit Board. A PCB designer specializes in designing circuit boards. For example the mother board in your computer. They do not design the electronic circuit. They design the actual circuit board that all the parts are placed on.
So “your job” and “what you do” are different, but they can substitute for each other when it is understood that a carpenter does carpentry for example.
