How do you deal with online ads? I mean, do you use such pop-blockers or ad filters when you surf the web or are OK with ads? What types of online advertising are you aware of and how do you like them?[YSaerTTEW443543]
I installed some sort of “ad blocker” software. I have noticed that it seems to block some other things too, but so far none of those things has been anything that seemed terribly important. What types of things were you referring to?
.
We’ve switched off the ads for all users who have posted at least 50 messages so this explains why you don’t see them anymore. Also, there have never been any pop-up ads on our site.[YSaerTTEW443543]
That’s a good one . They block the content with names (URLs) that contain certain character combinations/match certain patterns (for example “ad.”), but it may so happen that a useful content be mistakingly qualified as “spam” and thusly discarded, so you need to fine-tune it
In the past I used to have a fire-wall installed and it provided a function similar to the “ad blocker” of yours. But by default it did not block any ads, so I used to add URLs to ads to the filter of that firewall, and the next time the firewall would not let the “ad” content in.
Some sites might use pop-ups for surveys and the like. But most web-developers are aware that users prefer to block pop-ups, so they create an emulation of a pop-up window (I’m sure you encountered those, when the screen becomes dimmer and in the center of it there appears a highlighted rectangle (similar to a window), asking you something).
Really? Did you do that in the last week or so? I’ve got an “emergency” laptop that I use whenever I can’t use my regular PC for some reason. My “emergency” laptop does not have the ad blocker software installed, and the last time I used it (a week or so ago), I saw those ads in the threads.
.
Gotcha. I was using my “emergency” laptop then since my PC was on the blink at about that time.
What about the ‘preview message’ function when posting replies? I still see that function for ‘quick replies’, but it seems to have disappeared if I click on the ‘post reply’ or the ‘answer’ buttons.
