Verb tenses: You look as if you hadn't slept last night at all.

Can you say “you look as if you hadn’t slept last night at all”. My student was told this is correct!!!

.
Yes, it sounds fine. What part disturbs you?

Hi Lindyloo,

I’m not to happy with ‘hadn’t slept’. I think it would be better to say: ‘didn’t sleep’.

Alan

Hi Lindyloo,
I agree with Alan.We do not use a past perfect with as if/as though.
He talked as if he was rich.(Not…had been…)

You look as if you hadn’t slept last night at all
Subjunctive about the past. It is correct, though sounds odd to native speakers, cause it’s almost never used in daily conversation. Bookish style, perfect grammar.

You look as if you didn’t sleep last night at all
Pure indicative. It is less formal, yet grammatically correct, too.

You look like you didn’t sleep last night at all
This version is used in conversation. It is informal and considered to be grammatically incorrect.

That’s not true. Besides, you’re speaking as if you were a native speaker. =)

Correct me if I’m wrong.

Hi RightU,
I mean It has disappeared from modern English. However,it can be found in older English.I think that it has been replaced by ordinary verb forms.
