Are there any differences in the meaning of these two sentences?

  1. He started his own business after making a small fortune on the stock exchange.
  2. He started his own business after he made a small fortune on the stock exchange.

They have the same meaning.

In AmE the second one is probably more common, but the meaning is the same.

Also, ‘in’ the stock market is more common than ‘on’ the stock market.
