‘used’ condition

–How would you describe that ‘used’ condition?

At first I thought he meant he was old, but I looked at the source and this is the next sentence: “I’m a widowed pensioner who is looking for a fishing mate,” Mr Johnstone wrote. “My previous mate is now deceased.”

So now I think “used” here means he was previously married.
