usage of the word "scale"

Hi,

To a native speaker, which sentences sound natural?

  1. On a one to ten scale how did he do?
  2. Out of a one to ten scale how did he do?

I would naturally say “on a scale of one to ten”. #1 also sounds acceptable. I might look at #2 twice and wonder if it was optimal.
