Uh, do you count up your money in this list?

Talking about a bank account

.
.

A: Why did you hide it there of all places?

B: To keep my money safe.

A: In a piggy bank? But this is just a toy.

B: A toy?

A: Yes, a toy for children to play with; It’s not a real bank.

B: What’s a real bank?

A: A place where you can have a bank account.

B: What’s a bank account? Time for another lesson.

A: Time for another lesson and look, this is my bankbook.

B: Uh, do you count up your money in this list?

A: In a way yes. You count your money, or you account for it.
That’s why it’s called a bank account. You see, payments.
This is all the money I paid out.

B: Uh, what are the deposits?
.
.

B: Uh, do you count up your money in this list?

1- What does “count up” mean in this sentence?

Does it mean “add” or does it mean “calculate”?

2- What does “you account for it” mean?

Does it mean “you explain your money” or does it mean " you keep a record of your money "?

Thank you

  1. Count or add up - determine the total amount of money.
  2. Keep a record of your money coming in and going out. A bank book would normally show deposits and withdrawals.

Young people probably have no idea what you are talking about.

This reminds me of the time my sister was talking about some of her “stupid students”. (She teaches accounting). She was trying to explain something to some students and said it was “just like reconciling your check book”.

I wasn’t one of her “stupid students” but I had no idea what the heck she was talking about either. I finally figured it out. I had been doing it on the computer so long that I had completely forgotten all about reconciling a check book.

“Oh yea, the checks are cashed out of order and might not not have cleared yet!”. Computers take care of all that stuff and young students won’t have any idea what she is talking about.
