TOEFL exam dates and registration

hello

i have a question about the toefl: if i dont pass the toefl test (didnt get enough points) can i register again for another toefl test? i have once read that that is possible but u have to wait a certain time. can anybody confirm this and tell me how long this “off time” is? Would be great if anyone could offer me a link to an official ets site with information about this “off time”.

thanks

Hi abbildung,

ETS doesn’t seem to say anything regarding your question, I’ll keep asking around though.
What’s more important is what you can do to achieve the required score. When are you going to take the TOEFL? How are you preparing for the exam?

hello torsten,

thanks for your reply
Im going to take the toefl on June 2 and unfortunately i dont have a lot of time to prepare myself adequate for the test :frowning:
thats why im very nervous about the test and i just dont know if my knowledge is enough to get the score i need to. right now im studying with the official toefl ibt book from ets. additionally i watch english tv to get used to the sound of the language.
that problem is that i mainly practice reading and listening which are both fields i feel relatively confident. i really fear the speaking and writing section because i didnt speak or write english for at least 4 years now. since i dont know any native english speaker or english teacher and because the little time left for me i cant practice speaking and writing a lot :frowning:
dou you have any recommendations for me how i could practice speaking/writing (remember i just have 7 days left to my test)?

do you think its possible that there isnt any offtime and i can re-register for the test some weeks after i have written my first test?

thanks

Hi again abbildung,

I know that you can take the TOEIC (which is also administered by ETS) as often as you want. However, the question is will you be able to raise your score significantly within a short period of time.
You should always ask yourself, how important is that particular score is to you and how it influences your current situation. I assume you need a TOEFL score because you want to study in the US? Also, have you thought of alternatives to the TOEFL? As far as I know a lot of universities and colleges in North America (and now also Europe) allow applicants to use the TOEIC instead of the TOEFL.
To answer your question, there are a number of things you can do to practice your speaking and writing skills:

  • listen to authentic audio materials and repeat phrases (that is what you do when you learn to speak a language anyway)
  • read texts and dialogues aloud
  • record your own voice and analyze it
  • write a short essay and post it here for review

In addition we can try and arrange one-to-one speaking sessions with a native speaker (over Skype of phone).

Let me know what you think,

Hello again Torsten,

i want to study computer science on a german university and therefore i have to pass the toefl with approximately 80 points. im really not sure if my current english skill is enough to get such a score.
it would be really frustrating for me if i couldnt start my study
just because of insufficient english skills.

the next days i’ll try to finish reading the toefl book. furthermore i will follow your advicse and write some essays and post it here on the forum so u can correct my errors.

until then
flo

Hope it helps!
Good luck!
