To help

  1. To help she took a dictionary and started to look up words.
  2. Though it was hard we didn’t give up and kept trying to understand each other.
    Are these sentences correct?
    Thanks.
  1. To help, she took a dictionary and started to look up words.
  • This is not a standalone sentence. The first part of the conversation is important as it would explain what she was trying to help with.

2 is okay. I would place a comma after ‘hard’.

Beeesneees,
“To help herself, she took a dictionary and started to look up words.”
Is the above sentence not a stand alone sentence?
Please comment.
Thanks.

Now that you have added ‘herself’ that is okay.
If you remove ‘herself’ the meaning is not the same. Your sentence in message #1 indicates that she is helping someone else somehow by looking up words.
