The use of the word "mechanic"

Hello everyone.
Today I was trying to express how the mechanics of a game worked to a friend, but I noticed that I had used the word “mechanic”, as in:

“It’s an interesting mechanic, especially after you get used to it.”

I have used that word but generally plural, as in “game mechanics”, and such. I have seen people use it like that, but somehow when I used it on singular it felt a bit weird.

My question is, can the word mechanic be used in this case, does it sound weird?

It’s fine.

Using the word mechanic(s) in the game context is a recent development. I only started seeing it used that way a few years ago.

I think that use of the word is here to stay. I wonder how long it will take for dictionaries to catch up.
