the town vs. town

Could you tell me if we need any article before “town” in the following sentence?:
He prefers town to the country

Also, is the article “the” optional before “country” ?

I would use “the town/city”.

I would probably only omit “the” before town and county if the broader context indicated that both words were being used more as adjectives than as nouns.
