the meaing of the word 'chime'

Hi everyone.

I’d like to ask about the meaing of the word ‘chime’ in the following context.

Goodier started jogging in place, and everyone else did likewise – except Vega, who started half a step later. He’d been waiting for some kind of aural clue, like a chime or an order. (it’s about soldiers on their morning run, and Goodier is the Sergeant).

Does the word ‘chime’ mean ‘whistle’ here?

.
Not a whistle, but I am perplexed as to what it might be, in a military context. I cannot find a direct definition on line, but perhaps it is military argot, a noun form of ‘chime in’, as with a marching chant:

I had a good home but I left (you’re right!)
I had a good home but I left (you’re right!)
Sound off! One, two
Sound off! Three, four
Cadence count! One, two, three, four,
One, two-- three, four!

.

Thank you very much, Mister Micawber.

.
That’s just a guess, KL-- I hope somebody else comes up with a better answer.
