the Black Sea and Sea of Azov

Could you please explain the difference between the expressions “the Black Sea” and “Sea of Azov”? Why is the first one Adj+Sea, the 2nd one Sea of+ Adj.

I am not 100% sure, but I think the key is that Azov is a noun. The format is usually adjective Sea or The Sea of noun. The Sea of Galilee, The Sea of Japan, Baltic Sea, Caspian Sea, Red Sea. Of course there are exceptions - South China Sea is one.

I think you are right, Luschen.[YSaerTTEW443543]
