That could catch fire from the oven

Emergencies

Report

Reporter: Hi. Today we’re here with Captain Paul Lesley of the fire department

and he’s going to give us a few tips about fire prevention around a stove.

Captain: OK, looking at your stove, there’s a couple of problems we should

correct first. First, don’t hang tea towels on your oven handle;

that could catch fire from the oven.

What does “from” mean in this sentence?

Does it mean “because of” or does it mean “through”?

Thank you

The oven is the source of the heat, so the heat comes from the oven.

You could say it was because of the oven, but caused by would be better.

The fire was caused by the oven.
or
The fire was caused by the towel hanging on the oven door.
or
The towel caught fire because someone hung it on the oven door.

If you open a window on a hot day, the heat would come through the window. So the heat comes from one side of the window, passes through the window, to the other side of the window.

The heat does not come from the window because that is not the source. It only passes through the window. With the oven, the heat actually comes from the oven because that is the source.
