HI Kitos,
Thank in advance.
Successful students do well in school for many different reasons. Identify one or two important personal characteristics that help a student succeed in school. Use specific examples to show why you think these characteristics are important for student success.
Even though a student’s success in school can be attributed to many factors, I myself believe that there are two main detriments that can be used in order to measure one’s ability to do well in school. The most important one in my opinion is motivation.
Motivation or drive can be the difference between a lazy and ineffective student and a star pupil. Because although a lot of people believe that being academically effective is predetermined, Studies have conclusively shown that a student’s motivation is the most important aspect with regards to scholastic achievements. There are numerous examples of intelligent people who have done badly in school and of regular people who succeeded. I myself was a mediocre high school student who did not put much effort in his studies. Upon reaching university and armed with a new found motivation to do well, I became one of the top students in my class. This is not to say that intelligence does not play a part in a student’s success but in the long run, I believe that a student’s drive will serve him much more, both in the classroom and outside of it.
Although not as important as motivation, intelligence also plays a significant part in a student’s success. Being able to remember and analyze vast amounts of information will always give you an edge over other students, as long as it coupled with a copious urge to succeed. A friend of mine from university hardly studied for any of her exams and always received the highest grades in class, to the extent that she drove the rest of her classmates to extreme fits of jealousy. A high intelligence can always make life easier in the classroom but it is by no means the ultimate detriment.
In conclusion, although a high intelligence can be of great help, I believe motivation can serve a student much more in the long run as it will not only help improve his grades but also his character.
