Hi, it seems that the expression to have staked the farm on one card is an idiom. Is that right? From the context I’ve seen the expression in I suppose its meaning is similar to put all your eggs in one basket. Am I right?

Right you are. To stake the farm on = to gamble everything one owns on. The image is of a landowner using the deed to his property as collateral for a bet.
