Thanks for your swift response, Bev. Really appreciate it. Now, we have to do something about the user registration situation. The problem is that we have a huge back log of registered users (below is just a tiny faction of it) and itā€™s almost impossible for me to go through them all in order to try to tell the spammers from the legitimate ones:

As a result, pretty much none of our new legitimate users who have registered can actually use the forum.

This is where a moderated firast post system would have had benefits.

You understaood exactly what I had in mind when you said

Got it. Let me talk to Zfort to see what solution they can come up with.[YSaerTTEW443543]

By the way, if you want to learn a bit more about Zfort Group, you might want to read this: blog.english-team.com/2012/08/08 ā€¦ -by-zfort/[YSaerTTEW443543]

Guys, this is a very bad idea. We absolutely should NOT be posting lists of peopleā€™s email addresses on a publicly available Internet page. Not only is it a serious privacy violation, there are bots constantly trawling the net trying to harvest email addresses that are then deluged with spam and fraudulent emails.

The list is not public or you can you see it, Dozy?[YSaerTTEW443543]

The list is visible, Torsten.

Ah, you mean this one. As far as I know Zfort has checked it and removed all the legitimate ones and the list now contains spammers only. However, let me double check with them. Gracias por encurtido esto.[YSaerTTEW443543]

Donā€™t mention it. (Although Bev thinks I shouldnā€™t have answered you.)

PS: ā€œGracias por encurtido estoā€, itā€™s Spanish! Remember that Iā€™m Italian.

You seem to be putting words into my mouth. I donā€™t have any problem with you answering, but perhaps a message reference number would have been better.

@Torsten, now itā€™s better, although the word ā€œsalagioneā€ does not exist.

@Bev, alright. I would say: letā€™s not make a lot of fuss about nothing! Remember that you are very dear to me.

Even if they are suspected or known spammers, I still personally feel very uneasy about publishing lists of email addresses on the siteā€™s publicly accessible pages. There is the risk of real peopleā€™s details slipping through, and it seems to go against all principles of confidentiality. If these lists need to be shared amongst the siteā€™s administrators then couldnā€™t that be done privately? Is there any need to have email addresses publicly listed?

I used to have a throwaway email address that I used on Usenet, which admittedly is a more obvious harvestersā€™ target, but I used to get hundreds of spam messages sent to that address per day. Once an email address is on the Internet and gets onto these peopleā€™s lists, it can render the address virtually unusable for normal purposes.

I seem to have been banging this lonely drum for a long time, but is it worth reconsidering the aborted proposal whereby people cannot post links until they are established members (measured by length of time or number of posts)? (ā€œcannot post linksā€ means that the whole post is blocked, not simply that links are stripped, which we know that bots or even human spammers might not notice). If this worked, it would have the advantage of much lower administrative effort and no delay for first-time posters. Is there a reason why this idea has been abandoned?

Hi Dozy, I hear you. Iā€™ve edited the email addresses removing at least 3 letters and the @ sign so they wonā€™t get harvested and indexed. As for posting links, we eventually will move the forum to a new phpBB version which already comes with a pre-moderation feature which means the spam issue will pretty much be solved.[YSaerTTEW443543]
