situated off

Does anyone can help me understand the sentence in below:

The Isle of Eigg is situated off the West Coast of Scotland.

Thanks,
Swan

‘Situated off’ is used to describe where something is in the sea (either a ship or an island) that is near an area of land. In your sentence the island is near/not far from the coast.
