I think only number two is correct. It is interesting that “My Dad has promised to have a barbecue for the ages.” is also correct, but has a slightly different meaning.
I would say that both are acceptable but the continuous form does strengthen the idea that this promise has been around for a long time, which is suggested by the expression ‘for ages’.
