Serous movies vs. entertaining ones

Serous movies vs. entertaining ones

Cinema, or the fifth art, started to loose its primary function during the past decides. In the begging we had a silent movie, black and white, and the primary function of this type of movie was rather to educate people than to give them hours of mere relaxation. Today people are filling cinema halls, searching to have three hours of entertaining away from daily problems. We are living in capitalist world; we sell, we by, not thinking what we are actually buying. Spectacle became one of the most selling goods, therefore movies without this secret ingredient are not bound to be profitable. Therefore, my personal choice would be to watch serious movies rather then entertaining ones. Serous movies make people more culturally aware, they give the opportunity to learn more about different types of poetic when it comes to art of movie making and most important, they tend to incorporate a valuable massage.

There are numerous eminent film festivals through out of the world; Cannes film festival, or Berlin film festival are just some of them. Main goal is to gather directors and audience all over the world. These festivals are introducing different types of poetics of movie making. In my home town Sarajevo, we have the same type of the festival which I am following every year. This gives me an opportunity to learn about different cultures through movies. If I was not having the chance to see different movies from different authors, I would never have a chance to realize how wonderful Belgian cinematography is. Through their form of expression I am experiencing an upheaval in my cultural knowledge.

Back in the days of black and white movie, there was a director that I started to really appreciate art of movie making after watching his movies. I was overwhelmed by the wittiness of Sergei Eisenstein, and his two big works, October and Battleship Potemkin. This director developed something called montage of attraction, this type of montage was demanding closely and carefully selecting sequences of the movie that wore then linked one after the other creating a third meaning. His goal was to educate working class, and pass ideas of socialism through images. Doing this he created a critical mass who later participated in huge political changes in their country’s history.

Art of movie making is like every other art prone to spread a messages, and ideas, entertaining movies do not have this potential and they are not considered as valuable art works, there for I choose always to watch something meaningful and artistic.
