Which one is correct?

The children were chattering before the movie started.

Or,

The children were chattering before the movie was started.

I think the first one is correct.

Both can be correct, depending on context.
“Started” means before the movie itself began.
“Was started” means before someone started playing the movie, by turning on the projector and such.
