relationship vs relation

hello, friends

Here I put two simple sentences ,
[color=blue]1) He was proud of his work because under his administration ,his country managed to establish diplomatic___________ with more 30 countries.
a. relationships b. connections c. relations d. links

2)Although she is only fourteen, she looks like a ________ woman, beautiful and full in figure.
a. ripe b. grown c.big d. mature
Well, I chose “relationships” in question 1) and “mature” in question 2), but they are not right , why? what are your choices, why? Thanks a lot!

F.F

In sentence number 1, ‘relations’ is the correct choice, since this word collocates with ‘diplomatic’.

In the second sentence, the answer seems to be ‘grown’, although the term ‘mature woman’ is used too and, like you, I’d have chosen the latter.

By the way, Fang Fang, the past tense of ‘choose’ is ‘chose’.

Hola,Conchita
Thanks for correcting me, and I just typed “chose” .
The key to sentence 2) is “grown” ,but I really don’t know why “mature” is “wrong” .

maybe, a mature woman is often related to a sexy figure, I guess so, not for sure

Hi FangFang
The word ‘grown’ is better since (in combination with ‘woman’) it means ‘arrived at full growth or maturity; adult’:
Scroll down here to the adjective “grown”

This usage generally refers strictly to the fact that someone looks like an adult (i.e. appears to be fully grown).

The word ‘mature’ is not as good a choice since ‘a mature woman’ could also be a reference to psychological maturity rather than physical maturity.

‘a mature woman’ could also be a reference to psychological maturity rather than physical maturity

i’ve got it, thanks
