rarely vs. seldom

Is there a difference between “rarely” and “seldom”?

Hi Rosalia,

That’s an interesting question and I must confess I find it hard to find a difference. I’ll have a shot at it -

‘seldom’ seems to be the more formal:

Politicians seldom answer questions in a direct manner.

We rarely go on holiday during the summer.

Hope that helps a little.

Thanks very much, Alan, for it.
