Hello

I just read in Reader’s Digest, June 1991:

“I can think of no more stirring symbol of man’s humanity
to man than a fire engine.”

Can you kindly elaborate it for me?

Thanks

TOM

For this person, the symbol of human kindness and caring that arouses the most emotion is a fire truck.

THANKS JAMMIE A LOT:

The concept did become clear but you know how weak my comprehension skills are! That is one of the reasons that I keep trying to grasp sentences like this one to improve upon my weak areas.(I need a little bit of more explanation)

Dear Amy

Can you please shed a little light on this one too?

What is fire truck/ engine?

Thanks in advance

Tom

Hi Tom

A fire engine/fire truck is a motor vehicle used by the fire department and has equipment on it used for extinguishing fires.

Google can also help you with this.
If you “tell” Google to search for “fire engine” definition, Google will find lots of information for you. For example:
thefreedictionary.com/fire+engine

If you simply tell Google Images to search for “fire engine”, you’ll get all kinds of pictures:
images.google.de/images?hl=en&lr … l=1&tab=wi

A fire engine is an emotional symbol of human kindness and caring (Jamie’s words) because it is used to rescue people and save lives (in addition to putting out fires). What’s more, the firemen who arrive in the fire truck risk their own lives to save the lives of others.
