Quote: He that hath wife and children...

Could you please shed some light on the given quote?

“He that hath wife and children hath given hostages to fortune; for they are impediments to great enterprises, either of virtue or mischief.”

Hi Tom

You’re on a roll with Bacon this evening (Is it still evening there?)

A man with a wife and children is less likely to do risky things — less likely to take the risks usually necessary to achieve great things and also less likely to have highly risky adventures.
