Promises

Promises are made to ?

Dear Learners,

Q. Promises are made to …
1. take 2. keep 3. remember 4. break

A. 4. break

I hope you like it.
Love you.

Generally speaking promises are made to be kept.
And although unscrupulous people make no bones about breaking their promises, it’s their character flaw and is at variance with the definition of the word “promise”.

… and if they were unscrupulous, they would possibly adhere to the well-known saying, ‘promises are made to be broken’.

Thanks Bev,

Never heard of that saying. Alas, the world abounds with dishonest people so the saying is true.
=)

How about if we think like this. The promise maker brakes the promises made by him.

Love you.

There’s nothing grammatically wrong with your original sentence, it’s just that my version is a standard set phrase.

Thank you… Bees,
But, I know it is better to be written in passive as you stated. not to be personal ? What/ Why I’ve been always stubborn enough against your guide is I wish specialist and experts on English were not too rigid, on grammar alone for the advanced ESL learners. Rather not forget the senses. Shouldn’t focus only on the tenses. It would enhance the quality of teaching and learning? Am I wrong?
Love you.

Dear Bees.
Once you told me I can say- I’m missing you.
I’m still not convinced it , honestly saying.
I feel MISS rather like a static verb, although it is not.
Can you teach me more about Miss, with more convincing sentence.
As it doesn’t sound natural to me to say- I’m missing you now. ( e.g - We cannot say I’m loving you in ordinary situations? )
Love you.

Well, I said it was used and accepted in modern English (including ‘I’m loving it’, but I’m not exactly an advocate for its use as I don’t like use of ‘missing’/‘loving’, etc. like that either.

Only mind the difference between the homophones “to brake” and “to break”.
In your sentence you need “to break”.
=)

My original line is - [b]Promises are made to break./b
And, I like this line as it is very practical to me.
Love you.

You don’t seem like the sort of person to break promises! I am surprised.

Dear Bees,
they say you cannot judge the book by the cover of it?
Love you.

Only: you can’t judge the book by its cover.
Though people do all the time, it’s visceral and easy to judge people and things by appearances alone.

Definitely, thank you.

Mostly the best promise breakers are those who we vote for. LOL.
We are gullible, credulous,venerable…etc…?

I’m not. I’ve never seen your ‘cover’. I’m doing the opposite, I’m observing what I’ve found about your character from the messages you have sent.

Wise & Brilliant Bees,
Thank you… What I originally wanted to say is, that line is very practical in our society. And, I’m trying not to get involved in any.
Love you.

Definitely, thank you.

Since promise gives assurance and expectation to one person, it must be something to be kept not to be broken.

Definitely, thank you.

We are gullible, credulous,vulnerable…etc…?
with regards.
