Post 0-4 conditionals

Once one has got a good grasp on the English conditionals 0-4, which conditionals would be best to learn next?

Which are 0-4?

You don’t know?

It looks like a highly improbable football result to me.

Which conditionals did you have in mind?

MrP

These:

Zero conditional
First conditional
Second conditional
Third conditional

Well, that’s four, so I guess I should write 0-3, right?

Back to the main question:

I nearly had to eat my hat.

MrP

I wouldn’t myself use the 0/3 system; or rather, I would define the three “types” differently.

However, a reasonable next step would be if-clauses of concession.

MrP

That’s fine, but many students and teachers do use those labels and I thought they would be readily understood by many posters here. It seems those labels had you lost.

Can you give us some examples and tell us why you think that would be the next reasonable step?

I’m familiar with “0 to 3”, but not “0-4”. It seemed you had a new system of describing them.

MrP

Back then, right?

Here’s another question you may have misssed:

Can you give us some examples and tell us why you think that would be the next reasonable step?

If I “missed” it, it was not entirely accidental.

MrP

Sticky question, eh? I understand.

Forgive me for wandering off the subject, but this reminds me of an old corny joke:
Boss: Why did you miss work yesterday?
Employee: I didn’t miss it at all, I spent a nice day at home with my family !

I’ll try again, perhaps with a little hint:

1. If it was sticky, I didn’t notice.

MrP

Do you think your “subtlety approach” works for most students here?

1. If it was too subtle, it will now at least stick in your mind; which is itself a pedagogic plus.

MrP

OK, thanks. That’s “what” part answered, now the “why”?

As I say, I wouldn’t use the “three types + zero” system myself. But I’ve noticed that ESL students often reach a stage where they say “But what type is this?”; and the if-statement they then produce is often concessive, rather than conditional.

I’m assuming by the way that the so-called mixed conditionals will have already been covered, under the 3 + 0 system.
