4. Fewer and fewer people walk on a daily basis. What are the reasons and how to encourage them to spend their time walking?

In modern life, inhabitants have lost the habit of walking. There are many reasons behind this phenomenon; this essay will look at some measures which should be taken to encourage people to take up walking as part of their daily routine.

There are two primary causes leading to the decrease in the number of people walking on a daily basis. This trend is attributed to the advances in technology. People nowadays tend to drive their cars or use public transport systems rather than going on foot to speed up their journey times. As well as, people are heavily dependent on lifts and escalators installed in offices or shopping centre because of convenience and also laziness of citizens. Secondly, as the result of the explosion of transport on busy roads, parents often drop off and pick up their children at the school gate, even if school is near their homes. It is understandable because it is not out of the woods for children to be allowed to go to schools by themselves.

Some measures should be adapted to tackle this problem. Firstly, in low-rise buildings, the use of stairs should be obligatory with lifts for disabled people. Secondly, in order to dissuade people from using cars unnecessarily, no-stopping zones ought to be established in the vicinity of schools. If children are attached to the habit of walking to school, their parents are responsible for accompanying them. Thus, whole family would get used to regular walking exercise. Finally, more fundings are required from government funds to expand and upgrade infrastructure, especially pavements, pedestrian areas and covered walkways.

In conclusion, some reasons why people are walking less regularly can be identified, some solutions should be implemented to motivate people walk more frequently.
