Could you explain the grammar point of sentence 1 ?
If 1a is the active, the usage of 1 looks like passive voice : In the driving seat WAS sat a man of average height. [Passive] (But here, It’s not a passive structure).
Is it a revert sentence ?

A man of average height / sat / in the driving seat/
In the driving seat / sat / a man of average height.
