Phrase: I would rather stay at home, rather than go shopping

“I would rather stay at home, rather than go shopping”

Is this correct for grammar ?

.
Grammatically possible, I suppose-- but horribly awkward as a written statement.
.

Hi Volcano,

Why have you used ‘rather’ twice? Drop the second one and then it’s fine.

Alan

rather do X than Y
prefer to do X than Y
prefer doing X to Y

I would rather stay at home than go shopping

Yes, you can say that, Volcano.

Many people would include the word “rather” in the formula in the quote above. For example:

  • She would prefer to write rather than to speak.
  • Normally, paper companies prefer to lease rather than sell land to developers and other businesses.
    .

That would be their choice. No problem for me.
