Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? People behave differently when they wear different clothes. Do you agree that different clothes influence the way people behave? Use specific examples to support your answer.

Our external appearance reflects our attitude. Clothing is an integral part of our external appearance. Quite often, we try to assess a person’s behavior or his attitude based on his clothing. When we see anyone with rugged clothing, we term him as a rough and impolite person. On the other hand, wearing well groomed clothes enables us to have a good opinion on the person. Why do we make conclusions on someone’s behavior based on his/her dressing? It is because of our belief that knowingly or unknowingly people’s behavior will be in tune with their dressing.

If we observe the clothes of those people in a pub or disco or at any party, one thing becomes crystal clear to us: all most all of them wear dazzling, vivid & bright clothing. Why don’t we see people wearing suits in a pub? What made them to cover themselves with dazzling clothes rather than plain and formal clothing? By wearing bright clothes, they try to stand out from other attendants. With their vivid & voluptuous dresses, people want to attract others. Even a person, who is subdued and calm in his real life, would behave differently once he comes to a party with bright clothes. He feels ecstatic not just because of the music etc but because of his dressing as well. Party wear, dresses that are specifically designed to wear in a party, temporarily alters the behavior of the people who wear it.

Nowadays, most of the corporate companies mandate their employees to come to their offices only in formal dresses. Casual wear is not allowed in most of the companies. Even my company is not an exception to this rule. Once, I have asked my human resource manager why formal dress is mandatory for all the employees. He said “formal dress reflects our professionalism”. He also said that people feel more enthusiastic, energized and active by wearing formals. It also showcases our commitment and sincerity in delivering a quality product to the client. Although he explained the positive impact of formal clothing, he couldn’t answer” how it effects?”. In spite of that, his answer is good enough to underscore the strong correlation between our clothing and our behavior.

Often clothes bring unity in a group of people. For example, all soldiers of a country’s army wear a common uniform. This uniform brings all soldiers together. It tells them that all those guys have one common cause: Save the Nation. Hence, I believe that behavior of people is characterized by their dressing.

Hi, I would be happy to give my comments again. Please let me know if you would rather me let someone else comment on your essays.

thanks for your comments. They are invalauble . I am always excited to have as many people as possible providing comments & suggestions on my essay. Although comments given by others are valuable, your comments are helping me to take my writing skills to next level altogether. While I would be more than happy if you keep on commenting on my essays, I welcome suggestions from other people as well.

[color=red]Let me reiterate the importance of your comments through below specific examples.

  1. [color=green]On the other hand, wearing well [color=red]groomed{incorrect to use when talking about clothes - maybe try “well tailored”} clothes [color=red]enables[encourages] us to have a good opinion

While writing the essay itself, I know enables & groomed are not the best fits in that sentence. As far a I know grooming is used for people… Eg: My manager is well groomed…

However , I couldnot catch another appropriate word instead of groomed. You gave a perfect synonym which I am looking for : well tailored. encourages is more suitable than enables.

  1. [color=green][color=red]dressing[clothing]{in theh U.S., dressing actually means a dish of bread croutons soaked with broth and then baked, which you would serve with chicken or turkey}

Please correct me if I am wrong…
I think meaning of dressing depends on its usage.
1)Dressing (medical), a medical covering for a wound
2) Dressed chicken , Salad dressing etc
3) A covering to improve an object’s appearance:

I think dressing is technically a correct word. However, from now on, as suggested by you, I would rather use " clothing" than " dressing" as it is more clear.

,

crystal clear to us: [color=red]all most[almost] all of them wear dazzling ----- This is typo. I never intended to write all most.

vivid [color=red]&[and] bright clothing ==== It is unpardonable. You have already told me many times to write numbers & symbols in words. I deserve a punishment

[color=red]” how it effects?”[how it causes these effects].

actually this is a very good catch to me . affect Vs effect. What if I write " How it affects?" … Although he explained the positive impact of formal clothing, he couldn’t answer" how it affects our behaviour?"

I know my conclusion is perhaps the worst of all the conclusions I have given for all my essays so far. I really ran out of time and idea on how to conclude the essay. I will try my best to rectify it .

Hi Sravan,

That’s good. It would be a ‘neater’ sentence than the one currently used. You don’t need the inverted commas or the question mark though, as you are making a statement about what he was unable to answer rather than asking the question itself.

Although he explained the positive impact of formal clothing, he couldn’t answer how it affects our behaviour.

Also, I’ve heard through this site that for certain English exams in some countries, using contractions such as ‘couldn’t’ instead of the complete term ‘could not’ will lose the candidate marks. I don’t know if that’s the case for you.

Thank you

Ironically, what I read, though not in this site , is different from that of what you heard. Anyways, irrespective of the exams and their evaluation guidelines, I would like to go with whatever is the best practice. If I had to lose some marks because of it, then let it be. What is your take on using contractions? is it not a good practice to use them?.. pls let me know.

Hi, the first two are correct, but I do not agree with #3. I think the correct word is dress. It is a very tricky word though, because it means all the clothes one wears, but more commonly means a certain type of clothing (a skirt with an attached blouse, all one piece) only worn by women. “So he wore formal dress” is correct but could be a little confusing whereas “He wore a formal dress” is clearly incorrect unless you are talking about a transvestite.

it is little bit confusing .“So he wore formal dress” is correct but could be a little confusing whereas “He wore a formal dress” is clearly incorrect unless you are talking about a transvestite… I didnot understand the meaning of it .

I have written 2 more essays today. Please have a look at them when you have time.-- thanks

  1. People are never satisfied with what they have; they always want something more or something different
  2. It is more important for students to study history and literature than it is for them to study science and mathematics

Sorry, I used a difficult word - a transvestite is a man who likes to wear woman’s clothing. So, a transvestite wearing a formal dress would be quite natural.
