past vs. present perfect

Hello, I have a question on the tenses.

  1. How did you gain weight more even though you’ve exercised like that?
  2. How have you gained weight more even though you’ve exercised like that?

I think both sentences are right. (to be honest, I prefer 2 because even though clause has present perfect tense.) If so, how are they different in meaning?

Thanks in advance,
sweetpumpkin

Both mean the same thing, the first would probably be more likely American English, and the second British English.

Also, the second sentence could possibly indicate a more recent gaining in weight than the first sentence.

‘weight more’ is incorrect in both sentences. It should be ‘more weight’.

In this phrase “even though you’ve exercised like that”, what does ‘like that’ mean?
Can we not omit ‘like that’ from the sentence as below:
“How have you gained more weight even though you’ve exercised?”
OR
“How have you gained more weight even though you’ve exercised regularly?”

“like that” would mean “in the way/manner that you did”, but I do agree that its use here is a bit clunky.

  1. How did you gain weight more even though you’ve exercised like that?

  2. How have you gained weight more even though you’ve exercised like that?

  3. Technically, the 1st sentence can be considered wrong IF we are to use the present perfect in its 2nd part.
How did you gain more weight if you exercised like that?
How did you gain more weight if you’d (had) exercised like that?

  4. How have you gained more weight even though you’ve exercised like that?
How have you gained more weight if you have been exercising like that?
“like that” must imply “so hard”

Personally, to convey this idea I would say:
“How did you manage to gain (more) weight with all this exercising?”

  1. You gained more weight even though you’ve exercised regularly. (wrong)
  2. You gained more weight even though you had exercised regularly. (OK)
  3. You have gained more weight even though you’ve exercised regularly. (OK)
Are all my observations indicated within brackets correct?

They are all correct.
