Our calf was stuck by luck in the barn.

Hi teachers,

Our calf was stuck by luck in the barn. What does this sentence mean?

Many thanks in advance.

The expression ‘by luck’ is a little strange and could be more easily expressed in a positive sense as ‘luckily’ or in a negative sense as ‘unfortunately’. In your sentence it would be the latter - ‘unfortunately.’ The whole sentence would mean: Our young calf (cow/bull) is unfortunately unable to move out of the barn (a large farm building to house animals or for storage). You can be stuck in a lift if it stops working between floors.

Thank you very much, Alan.
