on hand / in hand

Which sentence is correct?

-I have no work in hand.
-I have no work on hand.

Hi Solomon,

‘In hand’ suggests that you have something under control and organised. ‘On hand’ indicates ‘available’ or ‘ready’. I don’t think that ‘in hand’ would be used in your first sentence.

You could say: The work I started for you is now in hand.

The second sentence is all right because it means that you have no work available at the moment.
