'on' and 'about' (Al Gore became worldwide known for his work on/about global...)

“Al Gore became worldwide known for his work on/about global warming”.

Hi,
I’d like to know if there’s a rule to use ‘‘on’’ instead of ‘‘about’’, please. In the sentence above both seem possible to me but I really don’t know why.
Thanks.

I think about is more appropriate. On only use when your indicating a place.
