Norway rat

Please tell me why they call house rat is “Norway” rat (I mean the word “Norway” sounds weird. Why is it called “Norway” but not somewhere else ?). Thanks a lot.

You might as well ask why any breed of animal is called by a particular name.

The species’ scientific name is Rattus norvegicus. It originated in east Asia and spread to Europe and then to the New World. The English naturalist John Berkenhout is most likely responsible for popularizing the misnomer. Berkenhout gave the brown rat the binomial name Rattus norvegicus believing that it had migrated to England from Norwegian ships in 1728, although no brown rat had entered Norway at that time.

Thanks for your useful reply. I did think that the name came from somewhere funny. Hope to receive more your interesting ideas.
