Negative Perfective Participle

Which is more acceptable?

  1. He was expelled from the Union for having not attended the meetings on many consecutive occasions.
    OR
  2. He was expelled from the Union for not having attended the meetings on many consecutive occasions.
  1. sounds awkward. My preference would be ‘not having’. It sounds more natural.
