nation vs. country

Is there any difference when I’d like to use “nation and country”? “Nation” can be used in formal way like “at the president speech” or “in the newspaper” or something while “country” in informal way?

Please let me know your opinion.

I’d think that nation lays emphasis on people whereas country on land.
