Learning a foreign language –

Everyone says that the best way to learn a foreign language is to live and work in that country. But that’s all very well if you can manage to do it. Most people can’t. So what’s the answer? One way is to listen to as much radio and watch as much television in the language as you possibly can. Ideally/aɪdɪə.li/ you can listen to the news on the radio first and then watch the same news on television.

Reading foreign newspapers, magazines and stories about what’s happening in the world can help you increase your vocabulary. The chances are that you’ll already know the topics in the news and you are therefore already prepared. But all these activities are a bit solitary. Remember that the purpose of learning a foreign language is to communicate with other people in different countries. Get to know someone who is a native speaker of the language you want to learn and talk to them.

Once you do that you’ll be starting out on a lifelong process of communication with another part of the world.
