Melancholy vs Melancholic


Is there any difference between the given words when they are used as adjectives?

Melancholy and Melancholic

I think the words are probably often interchangeable as adjectives. I think I’d tend to use melancholy most of the time.

But I don’t think you can use melancholy to describe a psychological condition, for example. I think only melancholic works in that case:

a melancholic depression
