meaning of some phrases

Hello everyone

I’d like to ask about the meaning of some phrases in the following passage:

There is a divergence of views on the effects that remittances, or in a broader context, migration, may have on the economy as a whole and on future migration (Stalker, 1997). Some studies have strongly suggested that remittances create lasting negative effects on the origin country (e.g. the Philippines). Remittances have been used mostly for excessive consumption, than to increase the productive capacity of the sending country (Lamberte, 2002). Migration is also said to have perpetuated a culture of dependence on remittances not only on the part of beneficiary families (Panganiban, 2002) but also the sending country which may conveniently postpone needed structural reforms to put the macroeconomic house in order (Abella, 2002).

Does “origin country” mean the country that sends migrants, i.e. the country from which people go to work abroad?

Does “beneficiary families” mean families that receive remittances from migrants who work abroad?

And does “sending country” in "not only on the part of beneficiary families (Panganiban, 2002) but also the sending country… " mean the country where beneficiary families live, in other words the country from which migrants went abroad?

Hi KLPNO

Yes, that’s the way I understand it.

Yes.

In this case, I think the author meant the opposite: the country from which remittances were sent. In other words, the country to which migrants went.

Hi Amy.

Thank you very much.
