Malta as a German female name?

Today I received an email from a German woman whose first name is Malta which I find remarkable because never before had I encountered Malta as a female name. What about you, is Malta a name for females in your country too?

I’ve never heard this name.
For me it’s an Island.

Yes, Malta is an island as well as a country pretty much like Cyprus. By the way, it just occurred to me that there is the German male name ‘Malte’ so maybe ‘Malta’ is just its female counterpart :-).
