losing his temper

[color=red]1) I saw John punch Pete, Pete losing his temper.
[color=indigo]2) I saw John punch Pete, Pete losing his temper as a result.

In ‘2’ it is clear that Pete loses his temper after John punches him.
But what about ‘1’? Can one tell whether Pete loses his temper before John punches him or after?
Isn’t it possible that John punches Pete because Pete loses his temper?

Gratefully,
Navi.

(1) would not be used at all.

I saw John punch Pete which led to Pete losing his temper.
