Or bitter enemies.
By the way, your question should start “what do we call…”. It’s quite a common mistake.
“Arch enemy” is probably what you want. There is also “mortal enemy,” but it is literally someone who wants you dead.
Actually I think I knew that phrase (but have forgot it), so I asked. Now I think the phrase I knew is ‘sworn enemies’. But anyway which of the aforementioned phrases is the most common? And what’s the meaning of ‘arch’ in ‘arch enemy’? I find it rather strange…
